Help! Circle of Rats
At dinner tonight we saw a rat run past - a few feet away from our table. It's OK, we were eating outside - so this isn't a story about a restaurant failing their health inspection.

Afterwards, we were talking about rats, and I brought up something that I remembered reading in Bryan Talbot's "The Tale of One Bad Rat", about rats doing this weird thing where a bunch of them form a circle with their backs to each other and tie their tails together. I vaguely recall in the comic that people didn't know why rats did this, and sometimes they'd die this way, and their skeletons would be discovered in this strange formation.

Everyone assumed I was making this up*, which annoyed me because I remember it from the comic. I've been looking online though, and am having trouble finding any reference to this.

Does anyone know if this is a real thing? Or was it made up for the comic? Or, is it not even in the comic, and I imagined it? I can't seem to find my copy of the book, so now I'm getting worried that maybe I just hallucinated the whole thing.

* For some reason I have an undeserved reputation amongst certain friends for being someone who makes things up, and all of my amusing stories and claims have to be met with skepticism and distrust. I don't think this is right or fair.

As someone who also has their claims and situations met with skepticism, I believe you Mike. Maybe we're just good at unravelling yarn.

We are in the same boat together. Unjustly painted as habitual liars and tellers of tall-tales.

I will concede to some occasional leg-pulling, especially among more gullible friends and acquaintances, but that's all in good fun.

I don't know if it's truth or fiction but it is definitely in Talbot's "Tale..." It had something to do with the rock groups name. I think the band was called "The Rat Kings" or "King Rat" or something.

Thankyou! Now that you've given me the name, I have found a page on the web to send to my skeptical friends, and vindicate myself!

Hm. I would feel bad now, ruining the reputation of this restaurant - it was really good pizza...

The rat-kings weren't made up for the story. There are accounts (and some photos) if you poke around on google.

. . . but most and probably all of them are believed to be hoaxes. (Also, there's no hypen. It's just "rat king".) I read a whole book about rats last year, and the biological truths of rats are 100x scarier than the made-up ones.

Well, for my purposes it doesn't entirely matter whether or not the rat kings are totally real or not - I just need to prove that I wasn't just making the whole concept up.

I think I also remember in the book though, that the main girl talked a lot about how rats are actually really great. I don't remember if she goes so far to say that they're completely hygienic and clean, though.

I don't have very strong feelings about them myself, though when I see them on the subway tracks they definitely don't look so nice.

Rats are hygenic, my ratties are always grooming themselves and each other! The ones in the subway, unfortunately, pick up filth from being down there.

As far as rat kings go, I've seen photos, but the tails of rats, I don't know that they're pliable enough to get tied in knots, though they can wag their tails.

I always thought it was an urban legend (agrarian legend?) but I would've vouched for you that it was not something you made up. They even mentioned it on 30 ROCK, when Liz Lemon's beeper seller boyfriend discussed it at dinner.

This does not imply that I believe anything else Mike says. You should've seen him cackling when he told us that wolf was attacking our sheep and we all came running. It wasn't even true!!
